Washing Dishes

A friend asked me the other day if I had an automatic dish
washer. I smiled and said, "Nope! sometimes I forget to do them at
all." The truth is I have washed a lot of dishes in my life. I have
faced dried on, caked on, and burnt on food that my dogs wouldn't even
touch. I have scrubbed out pots and pans that needed a barrel's worth
of elbow grease to get clean. I have done dishes when the water pipes
were froze and I had to carry in water from outside and heat it on the
stove. I have even worked in a restaurant where I had to wash a year's
worth of dishes every single day. A full sink and an empty dish rack
don't scare me then. In fact, I find it peaceful slowly scrubbing away
the crust and grime from my dishes, cups, pots, and pans. I sometimes
even sing to myself while I wash them. It feels good looking at them
when I am done and seeing them sparkling, clean, and ready to use.

I only wish that getting the crust and grime off our hearts,
souls, and minds was as easy. This world is always working to dry on
its anger, cake on its prejudice, and burn on its hatred. Everyday it
does its worst to fill our insides with its muck. After a while it is
hard not to feel like a 10 foot tall stack of dirty dishes.
Thankfully, though, we can all call in the best dishwasher in the
universe: God. No matter how much filth this world throws at us when
He washes us in His love and rinses us in His forgiveness we too come
out sparkling, clean, and ready to use. He is always ready to step up
to the sink too. We just have to let Him.

The next time you are washing your own dishes then allow God's
love, peace, and forgiveness wash over you too. The next time you are
drying your pots and pans allow God to dry your tears as well. You
don't have to go through life feeling like a dirty dish, not when
God's love and joy can make you sparkle and shine.

Well...

Well, I don't know how to say this politely. But I think the way Congress and the White House acted in the debt ceiling crisis has shown to the American people that no one (except the rich which is about 1-5% of the entire population) is happy at the current situation. Cutting down student grants (like SMART) is going to affect students in the years to come. Those middle-class family's son will not be able to graduate from college which he had been pursuing since grade school might be over for him. At the end, he would end up in average jobs in the hugely growing population of the US. But that's not it. The picture is even grimmer when we look at the retirement options for the "baby boomers". Thinking about a current 30-year old's retirement plans just shakes me to the ground. What are you trying to achieve from this? Money? Power? Claps from your party? Your lobbyists? Your special-interests? Well guess what, if you Republicans, Democrats continue to fight like this as little kids, it won't be surprising to see both party's demise in the near future and rise of a 3rd. So, just be aware that the these are not the only days for you to enjoy. Days will come for you when you will regret what you've done as competent adults in the Capitol Hill. These enjoyable days from now will haunt you down in those future days. So just remember this.

One in a million!

I was thinking about writing this entry yesterday, but couldn't manage the time to do so. Nevertheless, it would be really wrong if I did not write about this at all. So, let's give this time for a remarkable experience of me at the bus yesterday.
As usual, I was coming home after long day of work and college. I got on the bus. Just after I sat down, I noticed that the bus driver was saying something on the microphone. He was saying something before as well, but I didn't pay attention while I was swiping my Metrocard. As the bus was passing by St. John's University, the driver was telling the passengers that we are passing by St. John's University which was established in 1870 (which I myself don't usually remember as a student). Then he went on to say some little history of the university. He also added that the university's basketball, baseball and football are one of the top in the college division. As he was telling all this, I was totally astonished that how much this bus driver knows about the university that I myself don't know as a student.
Then, as he passed by Hillside Avenue, Homelawn Street, he went on to say why the names came about for these streets, avenues etc. The passengers all seemed quite surprised as I guess, he had been telling them history of the roads, what passengers are passing by throughout the whole bus trip.
Even when we passed by local DMV office and Dept. of Labor office where there is a Work Force station to recruit unemployed people to work or provide job training, he went on to let passengers know that this is a great service that people can get if they are unemployed or if they know someone who is unemployed in this terrible recession time. He added that if we don't tell someone who is unemployed then, we are basically committing a crime of not letting someone know a valuable information. The way he remarked about this, he touched someone, that he went up to him asked to repeat the name of the office where exactly in the tall building their office is located. This really turned me on.
Later, someone asked him where did the bus driver graduated from since he is aware of many things that an average person is totally ignorant of. He remarked that he has a degree in "bustology" (meaning the study of bus operations). He also said that people don't know how to the greet the bus driver when they get on the bus, or they don't show respect to the bus driver by calling him/her "bus operator" instead of "bus driver" which degrades their values because they, in fact, operate the bus by telling what's the next stop will be or such (as far I can see not many does that nowadays, but some like him do) rather than just plainly driving the bus.
At the end, when people were getting off, one passenger thanked him by saying that she had a great entertaining afternoon because of him. Not any passenger got off from the back door of the bus, avoiding to thank him. At the last stop where I got off, every passenger said something to him, either thanking him or wishing him "Happy Halloween" or something like that.
It was totally a ironic experience to me as I usually see tension between passengers and bus operators as a regular bus passenger. Even more interesting was that this man held the microphone all the time to speak to the passengers while he was driving the bus to keep entertaining and letting passengers know a lot about their city and such. I don't know if he does the same when he drives in the morning rush hours, but I must admit that this was one of the experience that I know that not an everyday person would experience on a daily basis. And that man was surely "one in a million bus operator"!

What to say...is it reality?

It's been quite a long time since I wrote something in my blog. But what I have experienced or seen today is something to record on this blog so that others can know about incidents like this.
Well, it was just another regular day of college, work etc. for me but when I was heading home in the bus, that's where the incident took place. The bus that I usually take comes from a distant place taking mostly high school students (most probably Francis Lewis High School) in that time after school dismissal. I usually finish around the same time from my college classes and work.
So, I was heading back home on the bus. As soon as I got on it, I realized that it's pretty much full with 95% high school students. What was interesting is that after looking around the bus from front to the rear, I noticed that only a handful (maybe 4-5 people who were non-high school students or average adult New Yorkers, including me). There were just so many of these students that their own conversational voice volume was almost like a high-volume stereo. When I looked at the corner, there was a black lady who seemed somewhat disturbed by this high volume of students screaming, yelling, shouting, talking, or just horsing around in the bus.
Then, at a point, a few girls of them saw someone they knew outside the bus in the street. They wanted to get off the bus right away. Since it was nowhere near the bus stop, the bus driver did not let them get off. They were standing almost on the stairs of the bus to get off, but the driver did not open the door, in accordance to the rules. This really infuriated few of the teenage girls. They were like "Oh Son of a..." in front of the public in the bus. They were shouting, screaming at the bus driver as if they are like some superior beings and the driver is like their servant who ought to follow their order as they say. The situation was quite dramatic at that point.
Then, when he let off the girls get out at the next bus stop, one of them got out while the other was obstructed by one of her male friend which caused the driver to think she would not get off and closed the door. This enraged that teenager even more. She would scream at the bus driver "You f**king a**hole. Stop the bus!" The driver did not care at this point since he was getting impatient by the happenings of these high school students. He even took the microphone used to call out the next bus stop, and told to the girl(s), "You better watch your mouth. We are seeing who's the real a**hole here". This was really crucial since I first saw a bus driver cursing at a passenger as the situation deteriorated.
Then, when he finally let them off at the next stop, they were cursing and getting off the bus. Now, the situation was calm. All the rest of the passengers were relaxed as well as the driver himself.

Then, what is it that caused this incident? Is it some sort of random incident that took place on an average day? Or is it the happenings of the US among the kids, children, teenagers all across the country? Do they not learn morals, respect, behavior from their parents, guardians or the school? Or was it that the school system in the US is fueling in this irrational attitudes of young people in this nation? I certainly don't like to aim at certain racial group but the majority of these teenagers were of African-American descendants, even though there were some whites as well. Is it this way that Obama thinks he can lead this country's future generation into a better stage for the upcoming years? Is it this way that the politicians hope to improve this great nation of democracy?

This is going unnoticed!

This week was a hefty week for me as I had to go to the local DMV office twice to fasten the process to get my driving license. I went two consecutive days to resolve the problem with the delay of my receiving the driving license.
The local DMV office is in Jamaica which is quite far from my home. When returning from the office in a slow pace, I noticed that a fire hydrant that was leaked and drops of water was falling from it. Since it was very cold in the week, the dripping water froze and crystallized over the hydrant. The strange irony is that the fire hydrant was in less than two blocks away from the local police station. In that area, polices are walking down all the time. I can't recall exactly which street it was, but I believe it is between 165 to 170 street and Jamaica Avenue.
I could not understand why it went unnoticed by the authority like the NYPD. And in the two days I went to that area, the same had been going on continuously. People are passing by without bothering to do something about the matter. I felt that "where is the local authority?" Is this really going unnoticed by everyone except me???

3 things on the same day!

This is another quite a strange coincidence that 3 incidents happened or I have observed that really made me laugh and feel sad as well.
This also happened when I was coming home from college after a long day (college work seems tiring at times). As I was getting on the "E" train as quickly as possible after getting off the bus, I noticed a lot of people were rushing as well. I have seen a Chinese man & woman (probably husband-wife, as it seemed) in the bus that I was in. They bought a huge painting (again, as it seemed) and was carrying it with them. As people were rushing to catch the train, the man also ran with the painting in his hands. The lady could not manage to be fast enough to enter the train while the man was. As a result, the guy was stumped! He got on while his wife was watching the train leaving the station. WOW! What a confusion! I felt pity after laughing about it in my mind as the guy and the lady were old (probably in their 60s). Well, what can you do? The man got off the train in the next station. I just hope they can find each other.
The next thing was in the "7" train. A bum (as it seemed, the guy was having a drink, coffee maybe, but may have had beer or something before) was uttering words that it was very obvious that he was drunk in the evening time. As he finished the coffee, he was about to throw it out. But didn't know where to throw it. He decided in his mind to throw it in a garbage can in the next station. When the door opened, he quickly ran to the garbage can, threw it, but couldn't return. As you may know, bums usually have a bag full of their stuff in it to survive. Ouch! He missed the train. His stuff went with the train as he was almost speechless!
Next thing was when I was exiting the train station. A black guy was swiping his MetroCard to get in while a Chinese guy got off in the same turnstile. Oops! The black guy just missed his $2. The man was shouting to the Chinese but well what can you do?
Things like these can happen any day, anytime, anywhere. If you are cautious, things like these won't happen to you.

This is human!

No. No. Don't think I'm going to talk about something strange in the negative sense. Rather I'll be writing about something that I observed yesterday.
It struck me quite a bit as such nature in human beings are very rare in our everyday life nowadays. But it happens. This happens because if we all had lost our morals, then this world would have been diminished a lot earlier.
It was yesterday when I was riding on the train to come home from college. As usual, I got on the "F" train (if I had caught the "E" train, I would've come home faster as it is mostly express). Nevertheless, I was tying my umbrella as it was wet and I didn't want the water from it to drop on the subway car. Since it was a rainy day, most people seemed tired. But when I glanced at the side of my seat I saw a black man observing water in a seat (probably from someone's umbrella) for quite some time. After a while, he used his newspaper that he was reading page-by-page to wash off the water from the seat so that someone can sit on it later.
This sort of humane characteristic of the man really amazed me. There were a lot of people in the subway. But no one cared anything about it since it did not bother them. Why would this man do it if this is not from his good nature? Such incidents that happen in our lives are very rare to find, but it happens if we look closely. I guess, I was the only one to have noticed his action as most people are busy with their own self.

Cheating during tests!

Yes! It's not very uncommon in anywhere in the world nowadays. Cheating in tests have become more of a norm now than before. Why would I say this now? Because I just had a Chem final today during which I saw almost "open" cheating which went unnoticed.
So, it was our semester final for Chem. It was taking place in a big auditorium with almost close to 400 students and about 7 to 8 proctors. You can easily imagine how hard it would be for them to watch over all these students at the same time. But it happened.
I was sitting almost to the sixth row from the back. There were two students whom I saw cheating in this (almost easy, but not quite) test. After about an hour or so (of the two-hour exam period), the girl in front of me was exchanging her test booklet with another boy next to her. Since it was all multiple-choice and everyone had different version of the tests (basically the questions are scrambled around), they can't talk much to help each other out. So, they decided to exchange their test booklet and the scantron sheet with each other by falsely showing that they dropped something and pick up each other's exam stuff to work on the other person's exam. I believe the boy was mainly helping the girl as she was saying to him in a low-voice to do certain questions. Even though no one noticed it (as far as I can tell), but when the girl looked around she saw me looking at their actions. She must've felt that "Ooo! if this guy tells the proctors!" I didn't unfortunately. Fortunate for them. Although at one point I wanted to say it, but "who cares?" Concentrate on my own exam.
Anyways. I felt I should confess this hidden truth to someone. And my blog is that path.

People...

How people are these days! It really wonders me to find how humans treat humans in daily life. This thought was aroused to me yesterday when I was coming home from college.
I was waiting for the bus. Usually I don't stand in the place where people line up to get on the bus. But I stand close to that. Yesterday, I was standing a little away from the bus stand since a car was parked right next to the stop. An old lady was already waiting for the bus for long (I could tell from her impatience).
As time progressed, more and more people started to gather for the bus. The bus was taking time to come as well. However, the thing that wondered me was the fact that as these people came about, they didn't seem to notice me as I was standing there before them. Instead, they were taking the spots before me. But I didn't take that seriously since most of them were elderly. Even if I was in front of them, I wouldn't board in before them. But I expected the young people to at least ask me to know if I was waiting for the bus or not, then take the spot before me.
Anyways, I find it hard to believe how humans are treating other fellow humans in this world. This view really needs to change.
