How a Jharkhand boy became MS Dhoni...
[Source]
MS Dhoni has showed a knack for the dramatic in how he goes about his game, and the reason for this is probably that he has led a life which can give fair competition to the raciest of thrillers. For example, when Dhoni and three of his friends were taking a road trip from Ranchi to Agartala in a race against the clock for him to reach in time for his first Duleep Trophy match in 2001, a huge step for the promising 20-year old, any weaker heart might have wilted when the car engine gave its first sputter.
The reason for this unorthodox way of making one’s way into domestic cricket limelight, as opposed to the more conventional route with the rest of the team by air, can be pinned down to the bureaucratic disorganisation of cricket in the country. As is said in Dhoni’s hometown, "If one Indian crab tries to climb out of the jar, nine others will pull it down."
An 18-year-old Dhoni had made his first class debut for Bihar in the 1999-2000 season, and played his coming-of-age knock the next season, in January 2001 against Bengal. The 19-year-old played an innings beyond his years, protecting his tail-enders admirably on way to a maiden FC century, 114 not out, helping his side earn a respectable draw from a position where it had looked like an innings defeat was imminent.
A shock call-up made useless by CAB’s incompetence
He was included in the East Zone side in the 2001 Duleep Trophy, a shock call-up considering his lack of experience. But his matchwinning ability had been evident from his earliest cricketing days, and selectors saw a potential investment. This was also a big opportunity, because most India cricketers would be featuring in that edition of the tournament, in preparation for the 2001 tour by Australia.
However, the shambolic state that Cricket Association of Bihar was in meant that they had no way of knowing or had no intention to convey this news to Dhoni. News did not reach Ranchi of this call-up in any way, till it was too late to join the rest of the team in Kolkata, who were taking a flight to Agartala.
It was Dhoni’s friend Paramjit Singh, a.k.a Chhotu Bhaiyya, who got the news first, and with 20 hours left before the match would start, collected money and hired a Tata Sumo and drove it towards their destination. Among the two other friends in that car was Gautam Gupta, Dhoni’s future brother-in-law.
The car broke down on the highway, however, and Deep Dasgupta was played as East Zone wicket keeper against South Zone.
Conspiracy theories have said that the Bengal-dominated East Zone could not afford to drop Dasgupta at that stage – he had already played Tests, and an important international series was coming up.
Might it have been that it was this that stopped the news from reaching Dhoni in time? Considering the dearth of Indian wicketkeepers at that time, might Dhoni have come up with something in that match to be called up to the India team for the Australia series?
What happened after the Agartala match
Dhoni was not able to reach his team in time for the first match, but travelled with the team to Pune for the second match against West Zone. He was 12th man in that match, but had at least one dream fulfilled. Sachin Tendulkar, who scored a match-winning 199 not out for West Zone, asked for some water from Dhoni during a drinks break.
He had to turn his mind to practical matters after this match, however, and was signed up to work for South Eastern Railways as a ticket examiner, by worth of what he added to their cricket side. He was known to be irregular at work, and was once served a notice by his employers.
Dhoni had to wait before he would get an opportunity at such a big stage again, before three years of steady progress earned him a spot in the India A side that played in Kenya. He was named Man of the Series and the nation was suddenly aware of the prospect of a long-haired wicketkeeper who could play for the country soon, someone who could run very fast between the wickets and who could hit the ball out of stadiums.
National selector Pranab Roy put his weight behind the Bihar (later Jharkhand) youngster, having spotted something special during his days of umpiring at the junior level while Dhoni was coming up through the ranks. Within a year of that tri-series in Kenya, Dhoni had earned an India cap.
It is funny when luck is ascribed to some of Dhoni’s victories, because luck has not always been his best friend.

Will BCCI ever learn their lessons?
Since Gary Kirsten left the position for Indian cricket team's coach right after Team India won the World Cup 2011. He was the person who brought more glories to the national cricket team after the team gained the position for #1 ranked test team in the world. It was a rare feat that Team India gained for the first time in the history of cricket.
Soon afterwards, Kirsten took over as the coach of South African national cricket team. The results didn't take long to deliver. South Africa took the #1 ranking test status from England after India lost the position to England in that summer of 2011.
Team India's downfall was just beginning to appear to the world cricket. First, they lost the away series in England (4-0). Total whitewash. Although the ODI form was still okay, the test form was suffering miserably. But the selectors didn't take notice of that.
Then came the Australia tour. Again, the team lost (4-0) to the Australian test team. By this time, the media was bashing on the veteran players for not giving the opportunity to youngsters. The trio (Rahul Dravid-VVS Laxman-Sachin Tendulkar) were still holding their places. But the back-to-back (8-0) series whitewash in both these away games moved the veterans.
Immediately after Australia series, Rahul Dravid retired from test. Indian ODI team was also showing signs of suffering now. They were eliminated in the tri-series between Sri Lanka, Australia & India. Though there were positives to take from that series in the form of Virat Kohli, the team, as a whole, was going down.
Next was the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Again, even though Sachin Tendulkar scored his 100th hundred against Bangladesh, Team India could not save the match. Sachin's masterpiece went in vain to a country known as "minnows" to the world cricket. Instead of India or Sri Lanka, it was Bangladesh who qualified to play in the final of that Asia Cup against Pakistan.
The IPL took over afterwards. The T20 frenzy craze in people IPL5 to be a even bigger event than any previous IPLs. The BCCI still invested in this money-spending business to earn some quick dollars.
Though India did relatively well against New Zealand later on, they again showed signs of weakness when England came to India. This time after almost 30 years, the English team defeated India in their home turf in a series loss. India lost 2-1 against a formidable English line-up.
Soon after, the T20 encounter went on to a 1-1 tie between them.
Then came Pakistan. The arch-rival's T20 encounter also turned out to be 1-1. But the ODI 3-match series. Pakistan comprehensively won the first 2 games. Even in the 3rd encounter, India lost their top & middle-order quite cheaply as the first 2 games. The revered-figure in ODI history of cricket Sachin Tendulkar had already announced his retirement from the ODI format prior to the beginning of that series.
With Sachin gone, the responsibility fell on the now-senior players like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni. Although MS Dhoni did deliver his best in all 3 games, winning 2 Man of the Match prizes, the others had little to contribute with their batting.
The run-machine for the last 2 years for Indian ODI team had been Virat Kohli. It is also been considered that he would take over captaincy after MS Dhoni. Even he found poor form during these last few games.
But the bulk of the blame has to go to Sehwag & Gambhir. When this pair fails, the middle-order crumbles, as it had been seen in the past few years. Both of them seemed edgy, not eager to get runs, or at least stay in the crease for the longer part of the game.
And, yes, the most talked about player, Rohit Sharma, still failed to get some runs. Though it has been few years now that Indian media & former players are bulking in his talent. But he had not been able to demonstrate that talent in the last few years.
Still Rohit Sharma gets another chance in the ODI series between India-England in India. Still Manoj Tiwary, who impressed everyone with his maiden hundred against West Indies at home after 4-0 defeat against England in England, gets no chance. Rather he succumbed to injury, sitting in the dug-out waiting for another opportunity. The last time he had a chance to showcase his talent, he even took some wickets with his spin bowling.
Ajinkya Rahane got another run in this upcoming series instead of Sehwag. But he has yet to show a match-winning knock. Cheteshwar Pujara would be making his ODI debut following good form at home in the first 2 games against England in the test series. But what about Irfan Pathan? What about Mohammad Kaif? What about Wasim Jaffer? What about Sreesanth? What about Munaf Patel? What about Ambati Rayudu?
Though Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Shami Ahmed were impressive in both their debut, they still need some more time. But in terms of batting, when would India produce some Gangulies, Tendulkars, Dravids who can play in all forms of the game: ODI, T20 or test? We all know bowling had been one of the worrying factor for India for many decades. But if the strength of their game, batting, fails as well, what would happen to Indian cricket?
With Sachin gone out of the ODI picture now, most people would turn off their TV when India would be playing. Even the last India-Pakistan game didn't get as many viewership as the Ranji trophy match that Sachin played against Baroda. This should send some alarming notice to the BCCI.
Will they stick to IPL? Will they want more viewership for Indian cricket? Do they want Indian cricket to improve? If so, what measures are they taking for that to happen? Will they invest in making good fast bowlers? Will they train players to play longer innings? Will they instruct players to play for the country than the money? Will they acknowledge that Duncan Fletcher is not working out for Team India? He might have been good for England team before, but is he contributing for the success of Team India? Will they bring a wholesome change after their defeats at home & away? Or will they continue to make excuses to hide the real problem here?
That is the question. Will BCCI learn the much-needed lessons?

Sachin Tendulkar's answer to fans on retirement
Sachin Tendulkar's letter to all fans through Anand Vasudevan...
Dear fans,
I am saddened as I write this letter. I know I have disappointed you with the series loss against England and my performance isn’t what you have always expected of me. I have always given my best for the team, but the results are not in my favour this time around. People are clamouring for my retirement and I can’t agree more with them. I have not been living up to the standards that I have set for myself through the years and I am indeed answerable to the fans.
I apologize to you for my dismal performances, and for failing you time and again. It is a general misconception among people that I have grown complacent and taking things for granted. But I can assure you that I am the same person who made his debut at the age of 16 as an excited teenager. I have been following my routine right from the day I made my debut till today. Nothing has changed, neither the preparation nor the mind-set. Maybe age is finally catching up to me, something I have been trying to fight for the major part of the last five years. I have been training harder to keep myself fit and strong in order to be able to give my best.
Cricket has been my calling right from a young age. I still remember the day me and Vinod were playing together in a Harris-Shield trophy match, where we put up a 600 run partnership. The immense enjoyment of being on the field all day long with my best friend was all I could dream about for the next few days. That was the day I decided to play cricket for the rest of my life, for I loved it more than anything; food, chocolates, bicycles- things that a fourteen year old could long for.
Years have passed after that and things are not the same anymore. I have matured both as a person and as a player. But the hunger still remains the same. I still want to do well and give my best whenever I walk on the field; something that has been my mantra all through the years. I have achieved so much in cricket- the fame, the money and the compliments came to me on their own. I am proud of my records when I look back at them today. The only thing I almost missed out on was the World Cup; I got there too in the end, with a team as determined as I was, who strove along with me to achieve the glory that I was unable to attain for almost 22 years.
But the real struggle was after the World Cup, when I had to suffer through another lean patch, which I am going through even now. People wanted me to go now that I have gotten my wishes fulfilled. They said it was the right time for me to retire, since my dream has been achieved. But I felt I can contribute more to the cause of the Indian team. The team needs some good youngsters to fill the places of seniors when we retire, and someone should be there to guide them, or so we felt. It might be a wrong decision but it was for the greater good. Perhaps we realized our mistake when we heard “the seniors are selfish to block the place of talented youngsters!”
Our only thoughts were about setting the team up for the youngsters and getting the tough tours to England and Australia out of the way, so that the youngsters can have a smoother path into the test team. But we did not consider our own problems, which were the roots of our own destruction.
It was a tough time for us after Australia, losing both VVS and Rahul. It brought me back down to earth, and I started contemplating retirement. But I had some solace after the century against Bangladesh, though we were unlucky to lose the match. Two series later, we were facing the same predicament against England at home and it was humiliating to lose the series. It was a nightmare for us, having had to endure the cricket crazy fans’ reaction. People started talking about my retirement again, claiming that I was selfish and I had to go sooner rather than later. They even said I am choosing my matches for the fear of facing quality opponents. It isn’t true, of course. I am an old man who wants to spend some quality time with my kids. They should know me enough to call me father and I do not want to miss their growing up years. Therefore, I take some time off between series to be with them.
I have to admit that I am a bit selfish, for I have been playing the game for the better part of my life. I have not known anything other than cricket. Every day I wake up to take up a bat and I sleep after arranging my kit bags. It has been a penance for the last 25 years and it would be hard for me to just give up everything. Retirement would be equal to death for me, as I have lived cricket all my life. Frankly, I do not know what to do with myself once I retire. Will I be able to secure a job as a TV commentator, a trend that has been catching up with some former players, or would I be a successful coach? Nothing pleases me like playing cricket and I am not sure whether I am made for other things in life.

ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka ... was it a good choice?
The ICC T20 World Cup has already begun in full swing with the Group stage already over. But what is noticeable is ICC's decision to pick Sri Lanka as the host for this year's T20 World Cup. Was Sri Lanka a good choice? Or, at least at this time of monsoon season.
So far, several matches have been affected by rain. Interestingly, West Indies are through to Super-8 without winning any match. That is because they lost to a lesser margin to Australia than the Irish team. Really? Is that so? Maybe Ireland could've beaten West Indies. Or maybe Windies could have beaten both Australia & Ireland and take on top position in their group. Thus, India would have been playing Windies on Friday than Australia.
Also, the other match that was critically criticized was South Africa vs Sri Lanka. In a rain-affected 7 over per side match, it doesn't make sense to have 11 men playing. Also, a score of 78 in 7 overs does not display how good or weak a team is.
In addition, the Duckworth-Lewis method is not effective for a 20-20 match. It may have been efficient for ODI format of the game, although I personally think otherwise. In effect, D/L method has aided team batting second most to all the time. A new formula or method needs to be adopted for T20 format of cricket to balance the game between two sides. Even ESPN Cricinfo's Siddarth Monga agrees with my point.
Now it's up to ICC to decide how or whether would do it or not.
